First Freestyle Competition At Flite Fest West 2017

Went to Flite Fest West 2017, and had an epic time. The Comradery from fellow Pilots was amazing. This video is all about firsts, as this weekend was full of them for me.

First Flite Fest
First time registering and attending a MultiGP Event as a Pilot
First freestyle competition
First time freestyling on BetaFlight (Stock PIDs, Custom Initial Rates [That I feel could be turned up higher])
First time running Lumenier 5x4x3 Propellers
First time dancing with (real) trees
First 4S Non-GoPro Experience
and probably many more...

I spent most of the morning fixing and addressing issues, and this is the best my quad has been flying in a while, from figuring out the source of my "Jell-O" Video (broken mount/back plate on my RR Swift), dealing with ESC Calibrations gone wrong [min throttle endpoints too high and causing motors to stop spinning when releasing the throttle [partial airmode]). I didn't plan on entering the Freestyle Competition, but it was a chance to fly and find out whether I fixed my quad. It was very intense to say the least, and about halfway through my run I started to feel jittery.

To think its only been about 4 months since I picked up a Transmitter...

Betaflight Config:
Proportional,Integral,Derivative,RC Rate, Super Rate, RC Expo
Roll: 44,40,20,1.0,0.82,0.00
Pitch: 58,50,22,1.0,0.82,0.00
Yaw: 70,45,0,1.05,0.81,0.00
Throttle Expo: 0.00
TPA: 0.10
TPA Breakpoint: 1650

After thoughts: I definitely need to tune this quad, it is a little "too loose" in my opinion, but that looseness results in a higher level of control needed to manage it, as the computer is doing a lot less than it could. I think it may be the lack of any RC Expo, and I being too low.

MultiGP FPV Racing Finale at Flite Fest West 2017

Watch the Final FPV Race at Flight Fest 2017. It was an amazing experience to be able to hang out and watch such amazing and talented pilots. I hope everyone enjoys their performance as much as I did the experience.

Side Note: These are the people I would need to beat in order to win a Regional Race. Do I got what it takes? Only time will tell...

Whooping the Time Away

I knew I would have some spare time on my hands, so I decided to bring my Tiny Whoop with me and get some "stick time", here is the end result.

The Duck Pond

Wanted to get in some fly time before the weather turned to trash, and to try out a different spot than I've been to before, as I've heard from other Pilots this particular park is ok. (Rumor has it [from other pilots I've met] the Mayor of this city thinks mini-quads are cool, and has no problem with us flying here). My only problem was, there were too many soft-targets to really "let loose" and try backwards flying, and new freestyle moves, hence why I just did a bunch of flips and rolls at (relatively) high altitude.

This is from a total of 6 packs that I only flew for about a minute and a half each (as I'm unsure of the power consumption with these propellers (DAL T5045) on 4s, however I feel they might be more efficient than the standard HQ 5x4x3, I'll find out when I recharge).

However this experience did give me my first encounter with RSSI issues (video signal was perfect), stick input would feel "drunk" would be how I would describe it. It was mainly behind that tree line I encounter issues, especially with my back to them, and my body blocking signal. Also that "knife edge" between the trees... yeah that was RSSI induced =D

Oh, and I took a look at the Telemetry data from my GoPro Hero 5 Black, and on that punch at the ending, hit 63mph! This is with the weight of the Hero 5 Black in a protective diving case that weighs in at around 200g, and right before I brought it back in for a fresh battery.

Notes: Reflecting on these props, they felt like they had a massive amount of thrust compared to the HQ 5x4x3's I have been flying recently, which would be good for racing, but not sure they are the best for freestyle. Will have to do some more testing (and be less aggressive on the throttle).

Happy and safe flying!

I accidentally stumbled upon this spot, and couldn't resist pulling out my Tiny Whoop and having some fun. Hope you enjoy the footage!

No Guts No Glory

I altered the "Diving Case" for my GoPro Hero 5 Black so I could mount it closer to the quad, and resolve some wobble on the pitch axis due to the shifting CG (when mounted via Quick Release). However, it appears as if my front right motor has problems spinning up from no throttle, that may have been due to a piece of sand that caused it to get stuck previously (See "Spiraling Out of Control"), and ultimately the cause of the epic crash at the end.

Resulting Damage?
1. Destroyed the "Front Bumper" plastic that protects the front of the frame
2. Damaged the front lip of the base plate (carbon is starting to split), but with a new "Front Bumper" it might as well be cosmetic only.
3. Ripped the pads of my FC for the OSD/Camera Passthrough, as the VTX wasn't mounted the best (needs to have a right angle adapter on the antenna) and slammed into the FC during the crash.
4. All propellers shattered

Overall I am very happy with the durability of my Spedix Black Knight 250 thus far.

Notes: Normally I like to post/create longer videos, but I don't have any other usable footage from that day (recorded about 2 weeks ago, at the same time as "Bando Barracks").

Happy and safe flying!

DRL Racer3 Test Drive

So, I loaded up the DRL Simulator the other day, and to my surprise, was greeted with an update, and when the menu loaded, was face to face with the Racer3, and the option to Test Drive it! Without hesitation, I dove in, and am amazed at the difference. While taking it for a test drive, something clicked in my brain, and a whole new (yaw) dimension of control was opened. For the longest I couldn't wrap my head around backwards flight, and how Johnny FPV, Skitzo, and the others are able to do things they do, and now it feels like second nature. I am posting this video, because there are only a few days left to test drive it in the simulator (for all the pilots out there), and this feels like a major milestone to me. More to come with my real drone =D

Drone Specs:
Weight: 942g
Motor Thrust: 1700g
Camera Angle: 35*
Camera FOV: 64*
RC Rate: 90%
Roll/Pitch/Yaw Rates: 1082deg/sec
Throttle Expo: 0%
Pitch/Roll Expo: 70%
Yaw Expo: 60%

Flight Club with Zoe FPV - Volume 2

No cops this time, and local security doesn't even look twice. To think its been only 3 months since I started learning to fly miniquads, and this would technically be the first time I actually made several laps around a track.  Flying a 250 sized miniquad on this course leaves little room for error, compounded by the fact of nothing to catch you but concrete.  Thankfully I (my quad) appear to have survived this round of Flight Club.  I had a lot of fun, and I hope you enjoy the footage.  Once again, special thanks to Zoe and the others for hosting and supporting this shindig.

Notes: Changed out my Flight Controller prior to going, and didn't program in my rates, (or set my arm/switch config [Thanks Nick for saving the day with your Surface]) so for this video I went with (Cleanflight)...
PIDS: Stock
RC Rate: 1.00
RC Expo: 0.70
Pitch Rate: 0.70
Roll Rate: 0.70
Yaw Rate: 0.60

Bando Barracks of Ft. Ord

Under the nose of the DoD, not that far from Pebble Beach Golf Course, and the Laguna Seca Raceway, is an old abandoned military town by the name of Ft. Ord(inance), with a rich Military history, and is where countless soldiers came for training until Clinton cut funding, which after over a decade of abandonment, you see in the state here.
This is the local meeting spot for other FPV Pilots in the area. Just down the road are a dirt short course, dirt oval track, and two rock crawler courses. A true haven for all land and air RC vehicles.
Notes: Mounted my GoPro differently this time, appears to have helped a good amount, but there are still some Tune Glitches I need to figure out. I also am progressively upping my rates, and it looks like my footage has gotten smoother. I will have to re-adjust my profiles and try some even higher rates in the future (but this felt pretty darn good)
